General Electives

Hindu College offers a wide range of subjects to choose your General Elective from.

While universities abroad offer the option of choosing subjects to major and minor in, this choice is not given in most colleges in India. However, the option of picking a general elective (GE) for yourself in DU qualifies as a means to provide you with a ‘minor’.

Carefully picking out your GE for each semester is essential. You can either try out papers offered by different departments each semester, or you could take papers by the same department in all the four semesters. The first would provide you with the opportunity to explore different subjects of your interest, while the latter, which is the chosen path of many students, would add up your credit in the chosen subject to qualify it as your minor, hence opening up more opportunities for the future.

The popular choice for electives while majoring in Economics are usually Commerce, Statistics and Mathematics as these subjects complement your course and are highly scoring. Humanities subjects such as Political Science, History and English are also chosen by the students, but do not constitute common choice as these might be slightly tougher to score in.

Therefore, each alternative has its pros and cons and your choice of GE ultimately depends on your interest and what you’re seeking to gain out of it.
