POTENTE

Manya Kapoor

Potentate was one of the three competitions of L’economiste’20 held on 4th of February,2020. An interesting and one of its kind policy making competition , Potentate made sure the participants put on their thinking caps and came up with out of the box policy recommendations.
Before the actual competition , there was a preliminary quiz to shortlist the top teams.
There were finally a total of 10 teams competing against each other with two members in each team.
Unlike the common policy making competitions , here the participants had to go through 4 rounds of bidding before they could work on an actual policy formulation.
Each team was given a fund of 100 million to begin with.
The first three rounds required the participants to bid for a country, a leader and a resource from the allocated fund. After bidding for the countries in the first round the participants had to pick chits which contained a particular economic policy problem that their country was supposed to face. With this information they bid for leaders and resources so as to prepare their country to best tackle the problem.
Countries like the United States of America and Germany got the highest bids while the likes of Iran and Finland were picked up cheaply.
Among the leaders, Donald Trump and Angela Merkel were in popular demand with both fetching hefty prices. Among the resources the telecommunications and the petrochemical industries were sold off to the highest bidders. The participants were cautious not to spend all their money as they were informed of  a surprise fourth round of bidding which would take place after they had made their policy briefs.
15 minutes of preparation time was given to the participants after which they were informed of the country-leader- industry- crisis combination of all the teams. The fourth round required them to place blind bids on what they deemed to be the most ideal combination and save as much money as they could.
After the challenging bidding rounds, the teams presented their policies wherein they justified their bidding pattern as well as answered all the questions put forward to them by their competitors.
The interesting competition came to an end with the policy presentations. Potentate proved to be extremely challenging and brought some of the best minds of Delhi University together to compete and vye for the exciting prizes.
